Energy Electronics – Solutions for tomorrow's challenges

A continuously growing share of electrical energy is processed by power electronics along the whole energy supply chain from generation over transportation and distribution up to the consumers. The ongoing transformation of the public energy supply to a self-sufficient system based on renewable energy sources will speed up this process significantly. Advanced power electronic systems are the key to increased energy efficiency along the whole supply chain, and to ensure highest availability and stability of the grid.

Since 2005 Fraunhofer IISB successfully concluded numerous research projects with the focus on power electronics for advanced electrical energy networks. This includes basic research work as well as industrial development projects with the objective of developing and qualifying components ready for series production. Main goal is to increase the efficiency, availability, and lifetime of the systems at reduced overall system costs.

Focus Areas

Battery Systems

Development of full-custom, cost-efficient electric energy storage and management system solutions for mobile and stationary applications – ranging from software up to design, integration of renewable energies and applications in e-mobility.

Power Electronics

Concept Solutions for the use of High-Voltage Direct-Current (HV DC), which serve as an alternative to alternating current (AC) as they have less transmission losses. With a special focus on reliability and longevity, we work together with industrial partners on HV DC components, specific subcomponents but also different protection concepts.

Voltage Electronics

Multi-level systems are the key technology for efficient and cost-effective ship- and vehicle drivetrains as well as stationary energy distribution units in the voltage range of 1 kV up to 30 kV.

DC Grids

For reducing system costs and achieving highest efficiency in providing electric energy, DC based systems and grids will play key roles in the future. This is due to the intrinsic DC characteristic of the main elements, like photovoltaic generators and electrical energy storages, and the elimination of many inefficient DC-to-AC and AC-to-DC conversion steps in the case of direct supply of the large number of electronic loads.

Energy Technologies

Together with our partners we investigate and optimize intelligent and decentralized energy systems for the industrial sector. Here, the main focus is on the integration of different storage systems (thermal, electric, hydrogen) and on the intelligent connection as well as control – also based on forecasts – of different energy areas (sector coupling, peak load reduction).

Data Analytics

We help our partners to get the most out of their data in the context of IIOT and Industry 4.0. We take an application-oriented approach that includes system analysis, conception, data collection, and finally the development and implementation of intelligent algorithms.
