Scientific Paper: Ultra-fast and ultra-safe active fault protection for electrified aircraft powertrains
A revolutionary modular system for fault detection in electric drive trains is the result of a cooperation between our power electronics geeks from the Aviation Electronics and the Chair of Power Electronics of the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg.
At the heart of this solution is a unique hardware-based control unit with an adaptive detection routine that takes different load behaviors into account and is capable of recognizing the insulation of critical failures in less than 1.5 ms.
This not only guarantees significantly improved reliability and robustness, but also enables the integration of active protection elements like electronic and pyro fuses as a high-speed replacement for conventional breaker devices in motor inverters.
Demonstrating the feasibility for aerospace electric propulsion systems, the new approach also supports certification objectives and accelerates the adoption of electrified aircraft propulsion in the field.
Leonard Kuhn, Markus Meindl, Christian Bentheimer, and Martin Maerz present their latest development in detail in their scientific paper "Hardware-based electric drive train fault detection unit enabling fail-operational capabilities for aviation applications".
