Solutions for improved electronic power conversion in aeronautics
The european research project POWER4AIR is developing innovative technologies for a safe, efficient and reliable power supply in the aviation sector. The aim is to enable the next generation of power electronics for aviation, in particular through advanced HVDC (high-voltage direct current) power distribution. The focus is on developing robust reliability models for modern wide-bandgap power semiconductors (SiC, GaN), the early detection of arcing and partial discharges, and compact, active filter solutions to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI). The solutions developed are being prototyped in a 250 kW power inverter and tested under realistic conditions.
The project is helping to drive forward the electrification of aviation, reduce weight and maintenance requirements, and enhance the safety of future aircraft platforms.
POWER4AIR is supported by a strong consortium of leading research institutions, universities and industry partners. The project partners include Skylife Engineering (Spain, coordinator), IRT Saint Exupéry (France), Fraunhofer IISB and IMWS (Germany), SINTEF Energi (Norway), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad de Sevilla and CEIT (all in Spain), as well as the associated partners ATR (France) and STMicroelectronics (France).
