Our Partner Universities and Chairs

We greatly appreciate academic cooperation. That is why we foster close partnerships with the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, the University of Bayreuth and the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. In order to ensure close communication with our partner universities, the heads of division at the IISB are also the heads of the partner chairs and institutes:

Division at Fraunhofer IISB Partner institutes and chairs Head of
Semiconductor Production Technology Chair of Electron Devices, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Schulze (also IISB Institute Director)
Power Electronic Systems
Chair of Power Electronics, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin März
Production Technology Chair of Manufacturing Automation and Production Systems, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Franke
Energy Materials and UWBG Semiconductor Technology Institute for Applied Physics, TU Bergakademie Freiberg Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Johannes Heitmann
Intelligent Energy Systems Chair of Electronics for Electrical Energy Storage, University of Bayreuth Prof. Dr.-Ing. Vincent Lorentz

Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg

Chair of Electron Devices

The close collaboration of Fraunhofer IISB and the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg is living proof that partnership can be born from vicinity. The IISB and the Chair of Electron Devices share clean rooms and laboratories and conduct joint research on various fields of research for electron devices and semiconductor technology.

Chair of Power Electronics

Together with the Chair of Power Electronics, the IISB works on current topics in power electronics and their fields of application. This includes, for example, stationary decentralized power supply systems or on-board power systems for vehicles, ships, and aircraft.

Chair of Manufacturing Automation and Production Systems

In close cooperation with the Chair of Manufacturing Automation and Production Systems, we operate the E|Road Center at the Cleantech Innovation Park in Hallstadt - a unique research and development center for the electrification of road infrastructure. The focus is on technologies for contactless energy transfer from the road directly to the electric vehicle, both when stationary and while driving.

Evolonic Student Team

In the interdisciplinary project Evolonic, FAU students have been developing long-range drones and sensor systems since 2018. The IISB supports the Evolonic team with expertise, components, lab equipment, and testing facilities, and for many students, it's also the starting point for their future careers at the IISB.

µe-bauhaus erlangen-nürnberg

Fraunhofer IISB and the Chair of Electron Devices jointly operate the µe-bauhaus Erlangen-Nuremberg, which incorporates both the vocational training programs at the IISB and the degree programs at LEB. The µe-bauhaus transfers the teaching concept of the Bauhaus Weimar-Dessau-Berlin to the idea of a “Bauhaus of Microelectronics” in the joint clean room of both institutions.

TU Bergakademie Freiberg

Institute for Applied Physics IAP

At our location in Freiberg, the Fraunhofer THM, we have been conducting research together with the IAP at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg since 2015 on the manufacturing of electron devices, characterization, and material processing, and we therefore maintain a shared infrastructure.

University of Bayeuth

Chair of Electronics for Electrical Energy Storage

Located at the University of Bayreuth is the Bavarian Center for Battery Technology (BayBatt). Within the framework of BayBatt, the IISB and the Chair of Electronics for Electrical Energy Storage cooperate, for example, to further develop the foxBMS© battery management system, initially developed at the IISB.
